The short answer: yes — and here’s exactly why.
If you have coeliac disease, you’ve probably had the experience of arriving at a cafe that claims to offer “gluten-free options,” only to discover that your GF dish is being prepared on the same surfaces, in the same fryer, and sometimes with the same utensils as everything else. At The Sanctuary Cafe in Dicky Beach, we do things differently — and we’d like to explain exactly how.
Our dedicated gluten-free fryer
Cross-contamination in fryers is one of the most common — and most dangerous — risks for coeliacs eating out. Even trace amounts of gluten from shared oil can trigger a reaction. That’s why we operate a dedicated GF fryer that is never used for anything containing gluten. This isn’t just a policy: it’s built into how our kitchen is physically set up.
Coeliac-trained staff
Every member of our team is trained in coeliac-safe food handling. That means understanding cross-contamination pathways, knowing which ingredients contain hidden gluten, and taking the extra steps — like changing gloves and using clean equipment — that make the difference between a meal that’s technically GF and one that’s actually safe.
90% of our menu is available gluten-free
We don’t have a token GF option buried at the bottom of a menu. Approximately 90% of everything we serve can be prepared gluten-free — from our burgers and fish and chips to our breakfast dishes, smoothies, and cakes. The Sanctuary Cafe was built from the ground up to serve the coeliac community, not as an afterthought.
